Vida (Martin) Welsh August 21 , 1922 - May 23 , 2024
Vida Welsh, our beloved Mom & Nana went to dance in heaven, on May 23 rd, 2024, just shy of 102 years.
Born in India, on August 21, 1922, she made her way to Canada in 1970 with her late husband Neville. At age 94, she made another significant move by leaving her home in Toronto and relocating to Montreal where she spent the final chapter of her life.
Our Mom, Nana, or Aunty Vida was a lady of determination with a zest for life. Young at heart, she always made a conscious effort to ‘dress up’ and loved the compliments that came her way. She was proud to have reached >100 years and be told that she looked younger than her age!
She was blessed with good health and had an incredible life. Throughout her life she was active with the Church, enjoyed travelling, playing Bingo, watching soap operas, knitting, sewing, researching family genealogy, and reading, especially the weekly bargain flyers!
She leaves us with many wonderful lasting memories and so many stories to share. She loved to talk about her pet brown bear Nellie that her family rescued as a cub, mothered and watch grow up to become quite domesticated as an adult bear. She is a World War II Veteran and was honoured to have met Mother Theresa when she moved to Calcutta.
She is survived by her three children, Iona (Frank), Maureen (Winston) and Louis- aka the favourite son (Jenny), her 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and her beloved canine grandpuppy Kobe.
The family wishes to thank all of you who were a part of her life, with special thanks to her caregivers Lily & Carmen, her friends Paul and Sheila who always looked out for her and the staff at Sacré-Coeur Hospital who cared for her with tenderness at the final stage of her life.
She prioritized finding small moments of joy every day of her life, so we ask that you do the same. Crank up some reggae music (preferably Bob Marley), pour yourself a glass of red wine, do something that brings you real joy and share it with those around you!
The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday June 8 th, at 9:30am at:
St Paschal Baylon Church
92 Steels Ave West,
Thornhill, Ontario L4J 1A1
Mass will be followed by a burial service at the Holy Cross Cemetery, 8361 Yonge St, Thornhill.
